Individuals

I work from a person-centred perspective, which means that, although I am trained to guide the process, I very much believe that you are the expert on what you want and need from therapy. Primarily, when working with individuals, I would describe myself as an Internal Family Systems informed therapist, which means I view a person’s experience as multi-faceted, and help my client’s to understand the different ‘parts’ of themselves that may be impacting the way they think, feel and are behaving. I work through an attachment lens, which means I understand how early childhood experiences can influence the way in which a person relates to themselves and others. I use an integrated approach to individual counselling, which means that I draw from many theories and interventions to help clients develop the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to manage the issues that are causing them concern in their life. I also enjoy using somatic approaches such as those found in Gestalt therapy and other body orientated therapies, in order to cut through the ‘noise’ of the mind and sense into the wisdom of the body accessing that often overlooked ‘gut instinct’.

What does that look like in sessions?

Throughout the process of therapy, everything from developing goals to utilizing interventions will be discussed and agreed upon through a collaborative, ongoing discussion. I will check in with you regularly regarding how you are finding things, to ensure that we are meeting your needs, and continuing to work towards your goals. I will offer you various options for tools, strategies and interventions and together we will steer sessions in a way that makes sense for you in both the short term and the long term. Most sessions are 50 minutes. We will usually check in for a short time at the beginning of each session. During this time we will begin to explore your current concerns, before moving on to formulate a plan as to what you might need from the session, whether that is just to process how you are feeling, or perhaps to learn or utilize an intervention or technique to help you with your current issue. Finally we will discuss your experience of the session and how this may impact your life outside of therapy.

I am trained and experienced in working with various issues that affect mental health such as anxiety based issues, depression, eating disorders, and trauma. While these issues may or may not be the initial focus of our sessions, it has been my experience that going through the process of either finding, developing, or growing supportive relationships in your life, will go some way to help you feel more equipped to manage the mental illness or mental health issues you may be living with.
